The problem of irritable bowel syndrome is characterized by its many facets. The image of unclear abdominal symptoms can be triggered by a variety of different causes. The standard gastroenterological diagnosis usually excludes serious chronic inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), malignant regeneration, Coeliac disease and other through endoscopic or imaging diagnostic procedures representable disorders. However this type of diagnosis often misses functional disorders, which can’t be detected by visual presentation (at the moment). The functional laboratory analysis however may detect these disorders in the scope of the complementary gastroenterology. A wide spectrum of parameters closes this diagnostic gap and allows the therapist a precise fitting and individual therapy for his patients.

Decades ago the old empiricists have already thaugt us that the gastrointestinal tract has an influence on the mood of our patients. Today it is one of the latest scientific findings, that the stomach communicates with the central nervous system via different channels. A "healty stomach" - one could also say "a good gut-feeling" - guaranteed that the central nervous system is not adversely affected by irritating and disturbing misinformations. In contrast an unstable micro ecological milieu, a permeability disturbance of the intestinal mucosa or an activation of the intestinal immune system leads to a "communication error" in the area known as gut-brain axis connecting path. These communication problems can trigger neuropsychiatric symptoms in our patients, which have to be interpreted in the right way - namely as somatopsychic.
The seminar shows the relationshop between bowel dysfunction, disturbed gut-brain axis and affective disorders. The modern laboratory medicine offers good opportunities to identify these issues and thus make them accessible to a probate therapy.
