Probiotics
What are probiotics?
Probiotics are living microorganisms (especially lactic acid bacteria), which have the attribute to have a positive influence on the intestinal flora and therefore many healthy benefits.
Examples are:
Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus casei, Bifidobacteria, Enterococci.
Probiotic bacteria must satisfy certain requirements:
- Harmless to health: non-pathogenic and non-toxic to humans
- Coming from the human intestine, therefore adapted to the ecosystem of the human intestine
- Tolerant against gastric juice and bile acid and sufficient resistance against digestive enzymes. Only these bacteria survive after the ingestion the stomach passage and reach the intestine in sufficient quantity.
- Proven healthy benefits
What can probiotics?
The following effects of probiotic bacteria are proven and will be discussed (see: De Vrese, Schrezenmeir: Probiotika, Praxishandbuch Functional Food, 1. Akt. Lfg. 03/2000):
- Reduced frequency and duration of different diarrhoea
- Support or preservation of an optimal intestinal flora
- Regulation of motility in case of constipation
- Immunomodulation
- Strengthening the immune system, prevention of infectious diseases, reduction of allergies and autoimmune diseases, fields of application as adjuvant.
- Reducing the cholesterol level, influence to the lipid metabolism
- Support the digestion of lactose in case of lactose malabsorption
- Flexible use at vaginitis
- Reducing the concentration of harmful metabolic products and cancer supporting enzymes in the colon
- Increasing mineral absorption, prevention of osteoporosis
Who needs probiotics?
A healthy intestine is one of the basic assumptions for health in general.
The sensitive ecosystem of the intestinal flora can be quickly unbalanced through our modern way of life.
- Unbalanced nutrition (for example too little dairy products and dietary fiber, fast food, too much sugar, fat or protein)
- Ingestion of drugs (for example antibiotics or long-term medication)
- Stress and tension
- Lack of physical activity
- Change in nutrition, for example during travelling
- Competitive sport
Then it is important to supplement the daily nutrition and to balance this deficit through the ingestion of probiotic bacteria for probiotik®pur or probiotik®sport.
In general, the ingestion of probiotics is suggested for all nutrition-conscious people.
